Rotary and Blood Bank Society Resource Centre is a joint venture between  the Rotary Club of Chandigarh and Blood Bank Society of Chandigarh. The centre, started in July 2004, runs on the concept of 100% voluntary blood donations by means of either indoor or outdoor blood donations camps. The centre provides round the clock service for blood and blood components to patients in and around Chandigarh.  The centre is a NGO run charitable organization licensed by the Drug Controller of India and recognized by SBTC(State Blood Transfusion Council) Chandigarh UT. The centre works in co-ordination with NACO (National AIDS control Organization) through the Chandigarh SACS(State AIDS Control Society).

Rotary and Blood Bank  Society Resource Centre is  equipped with the latest, state of the art equipment and provides round the clock services, 365 days a year. The Centre provides all types of blood and blood products like fresh frozen plasma, platelets and cyropreciptate. The Centre is now also prepared to undertake apheresis procedures to harvest fresh blood platelets to help patients suffering from dengue, burns and during the treatment of various cancers. The centre issues approximately 1000-1500 units of blood and various blood components every month.

Rotary and Blood bank Society Resource Centre is run on the concept of 100% voluntary blood donations by means of either indoor or outdoor blood donation camps. The idea behind which is to ensure quality blood and blood components since blood safety begins with a safe & healthy blood donor.

The centre issues blood and blood components totally free of cost to poor/ needy patients as well as patients suffering from disorders like Thalassemia and Haemophilia & also to all kinds of cancers patients.

License for Operation as a Blood Bank

The Blood Resource centre is an authorized centre by the drug controller general of India for processing of Whole Blood, Blood Components and Apheresis. As per the policy of the Drug Controller General of India, a team from the office of Drug Controller, U.T Chandigarh conducts periodic checks to observe the functioning of the Blood Centre.

Mandatory Tests

All blood collected by the Centre undergoes five mandatory screening tests as prescribed by the National Blood Transfusion Policy (Government of India) as follows:

  • HIV (AIDS)
  • Hepatitis B Virus
  • Hepatitis C Virus
  • Syphilis
  • Malaria

Blood demand and supply

The blood and blood components were issued as per the demand of various hospitals in Chandigarh and adjoining areas in the states of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.

In accordance with the national policy the Blood Centre coordinates   its activities closely with National Aids Control Organisation (NACO) and State Aids Control Organisation (SACO). In accordance with the mandatory instructions of NACO/SACO, a detailed report on various parameters is sent to the concerned authorities regularly. The reports include information on each month’s blood collection and issue, its testing for various diseases, the number of positive units discarded due to various reasons, the state of equipment and other technical aspects.

Blood Donation Camps

The Blood Centre-37 conducts, on an average, ten to twelve blood donation camps at various places every month. The donors are counselled before and after donation thoroughly on all aspects of blood donation by highly trained and dedicated staff of this Centre including the Director, Blood Transfusion Officer and a professional Counsellor.
