Welcome to Rotary and Blood Bank Society Centre

Rotary and Blood Bank Society Resource Centre

Today, blood donation has become an increasingly important facet of public health. It transcends barriers of caste, creed, status and truly symbolizes the universality of the human race. Rotary and Blood Bank Society Resource Centre is a joint venture between Rotary Club of Chandigarh and Blood Bank Society, Chandigarh. The Centre, started in July 2004, runs on the concept of 100% voluntary blood donations by means of either indoor or outdoor blood donations camps. The center provides round the clock service for blood and blood components to patients in and around Chandigarh.

Blood is the red coloured fluid flowing continuously in our body’s circulatory system. About 1/12th of the body weight of a healthy individual is blood. On an average there are about 5 – 6 liters of blood present.
Blood consists of RBCs, WBCs, platelets suspended in plasma. In early embryonic life blood cells are formed in liver and spleen. But by the fifth month the Haemopoiesis (i.e., formation of blood.) occurs in bone marrow and lymphatic tissues.

Any person within the age group of 18 – 60 years with a body weight as minimum 45 kgs, and having hemoglobin content as minimum 12.5 gm.

The donor needs rest, preferably lying down, so that the amount of blood that has been donated soon gets poured into the circulation from the body pools in a natural way. The donor should take it easy for about 15 – 20 minutes.

Eat something substantial before your appointment. This might be cereal and toast for breakfast, or a sandwich at lunchtime. Please don’t come in on an empty stomach. During donation giving blood takes just 5-10 minutes but you should allow about an hour from arrival to departure, which includes time for your interview and refreshments.
